My Infertility Journey (part 3)

December 20, 2013 By: Eve Robertscomment

Infertility Journey
**If you want to read my story from the beginning read part 1 and part 2.

In late November 2013 we visited with a new OBGYN and to my surprise, I really liked this new doctor! He looked at our past test results and once again told us everything looked great, except for my progesterone levels.  I had scored a 7; but it should have been at least 10 or higher. Since this test was lower than it should have been I was scheduled for another progesterone test a few days later.

At our consultation the doctor also informed us that we should consider having a hysterosalpingogram (HSG). It is a test to check if your fallopian tubes are open and runs about $600 – $1500. After much discussion I decided to start on clomid for days 3-7. If we don’t get a Big Fat Positive (BFP) after a few months we will have the HSG test done.

My second progesterone test results came in at 13.6, which was substantially higher than the 7 I scored initially.  Since my test scores were good, our doctor said we are now considered to have unexplained fertility (assuming the HSG test comes back positive). We will keep trying the Clomid for now and see what happens.

Psalm 23

Lately, I have been struggling with fitting in.  I work from home, so I don’t have a group of co-workers to hang out with. I am not a mom, so I don’t fit in with the mom groups at church.  Even many of my friends are now moms, so we have grown apart.  It is a painful lonely feeling not being able to fit-in.  However, today I realized that Jesus didn’t fit in with any groups either. I am reminded that Jesus understands my pain and suffering.  I am not walking alone.  God uses the broken-hearted and I know it is only a matter of time until I will have a powerful testimony to share.

If you too are struggling from infertility or miscarriages, please know that you are not alone.

My Infertility Journey (part 1)

Infertility Help

My husband and I married in October 2010. I was on birth control for about 5 months, but went off due to it making me non-stop emotional.  For the next two years our birth control method was going “Catholic style”, which basically meant not having sex between days 11 and 18 of my cycle.  We were so glad that it had “worked” and that we didn’t have any surprises along the way.

In August 2012 we decided to start trying for kids.  At this point for us it meant taking prenatal vitamins and doing the deed between days 11 and 18.  After 6 months of trying without any luck, we decided to try a little harder.  I started using an ovulation kit, taking my basal body temperature, not drinking coffee, and giving up my casual wine drinking.  Another 2 months went by without any luck of getting pregnant. At this same time 4 of my friends had gotten pregnant. I was ecstatic for them, but I was also very envious of their joy.

In May 2013, I went in for my annual pap and decided to ask my obgyn about the next steps. She suggested that I get 3 blood tests and my husband get a sperm analysis.  That day she also gave me an ultrasound since it happened to be my ovulation day so she could see my follicles.  Everything looked great for us! My follicles were large enough to ovulate, my blood work looked perfect, and my husband’s sperm analysis came back great. It was frustrating to know that we were healthy, fit, and everything seemed to be functioning normally, yet we still could not get pregnant.

We tried a few more months without any luck.  Each month it was heartbreaking to get a negative test.  No one around me really understood the pain that I was feeling. This month my husband and I decided to take the next step.  We called to make another appointment with my obgyn, only to find out that she moved.  We live in a smaller town and there are no other fertility specialists, so we made an appointment with a different obgyn to talk about our next course of action.  We will see how that appointment goes next month.
